BC-ADMM: An Efficient Non-convex Constrained Optimizer with Robotic Applications
Non-convex constrained optimizations are ubiquitous in robotic applications such as multi-agent navigation, UAV trajectory optimization, and soft robot simulation. For this problem class, conventional optimizers suffer from small step sizes and slow convergence. We propose BC-ADMM, a variant of Alternating Direction Method of Multiplier (ADMM), that can solve a class of non-convex constrained optimizations with biconvex constraint relaxation. Our algorithm allows larger step sizes by breaking the problem into small-scale sub-problems that can be easily solved in parallel. We show that our method has both theoretical convergence speed guarantees and practical convergence guarantees in the asymptotic sense. Through numerical experiments in a row of four robotic applications, we show that BC-ADMM has faster convergence than conventional gradient descent and Newton's method in terms of wall clock time.
MC-Swarm: Minimal-Communication Multi-Agent Trajectory Planning and Deadlock Resolution for Quadrotor Swarm
--For effective multi-agent trajectory planning, it is important to consider lightweight communication and its potential asynchrony. This paper presents a distributed trajectory planning algorithm for a quadrotor swarm that operates asynchronously and requires no communication except during the initial planning phase. T o effectively ensure these points, we build two main modules: coordination state updater and trajectory optimizer . The coordination state updater computes waypoints for each agent toward its goal and performs subgoal optimization while considering deadlocks, as well as safety constraints with respect to neighbor agents and obstacles. Then, the trajectory optimizer generates a trajectory that ensures collision avoidance even with the asynchronous planning updates of neighboring agents. We provide a theoretical guarantee of collision avoidance with deadlock resolution and evaluate the effectiveness of our method in complex simulation environments, including random forests and narrow-gap mazes. Additionally, to reduce the total mission time, we design a faster coordination state update using lightweight communication. Lastly, our approach is validated through extensive simulations and real-world experiments with cluttered environment scenarios. HE compactness of quadrotor drones enables the operation of multi-agent systems in cluttered environments. While small teams of drones can be manually controlled by human pilots, large-scale swarms require autonomous coordination, where multi-agent trajectory planning (MA TP) serves as a critical component. Over the past decade, MA TP has been extensively studied, leading to its adoption in various applications, such as surveillance [1], inspection [2], and transportation [3]. Many existing MA TP frameworks rely on synchronous coordination, where agents repeatedly exchange information to maintain consistency during planning and execution [4]. However, as the number of agents increases, the communication load grows significantly, often resulting in message delays and packet losses. TOCALib: Optimal control library with interpolation for bimanual manipulation and obstacles avoidance

TOCALib: Optimal control library with interpolation for bimanual manipulation and obstacles avoidance Y ulia Danik 1, Dmitry Makarov 2, Aleksandra Arkhipova 3, Sergei Davidenko 4 and Aleksandr Panov 5 Abstract -- The paper presents a new approach for constructing a library of optimal trajectories for two robotic manipulators, Two-Arm Optimal Control and A voidance Library (TOCALib) 1 . The optimisation takes into account kinodynamic and other constraints within the FROST framework. The novelty of the method lies in the consideration of collisions using the DCOL method, which allows obtaining symbolic expressions for assessing the presence of collisions and using them in gradient-based optimization control methods. The proposed approach allowed the implementation of complex bimanual manipulations. In this paper we used Mobile Aloha as an example of TOCALib application. The approach can be extended to other bimanual robots, as well as to gait control of bipedal robots. It can also be used to construct training data for machine learning tasks for manipulation.
Narrow Passage Path Planning using Collision Constraint Interpolation

Narrow passage path planning is a prevalent problem from industrial to household sites, often facing difficulties in finding feasible paths or requiring excessive computational resources. Given that deep penetration into the environment can cause optimization failure, we propose a framework to ensure feasibility throughout the process using a series of subproblems tailored for narrow passage problem. We begin by decomposing the environment into convex objects and initializing collision constraints with a subset of these objects. By continuously interpolating the collision constraints through the process of sequentially introducing remaining objects, our proposed framework generates subproblems that guide the optimization toward solving the narrow passage problem. Several examples are presented to demonstrate how the proposed framework addresses narrow passage path planning problems.
Multi-UAVs end-to-end Distributed Trajectory Generation over Point Cloud Data

This paper introduces an end-to-end trajectory planning algorithm tailored for multi-UAV systems that generates collision-free trajectories in environments populated with both static and dynamic obstacles, leveraging point cloud data. Our approach consists of a 2-fork neural network fed with sensing and localization data, able to communicate intermediate learned features among the agents. One network branch crafts an initial collision-free trajectory estimate, while the other devises a neural collision constraint for subsequent optimization, ensuring trajectory continuity and adherence to physicalactuation limits. Extensive simulations in challenging cluttered environments, involving up to 25 robots and 25% obstacle density, show a collision avoidance success rate in the range of 100 -- 85%. Finally, we introduce a saliency map computation method acting on the point cloud data, offering qualitative insights into our methodology.
Efficient collision avoidance for autonomous vehicles in polygonal domains

This research focuses on trajectory planning problems for autonomous vehicles utilizing numerical optimal control techniques. The study reformulates the constrained optimization problem into a nonlinear programming problem, incorporating explicit collision avoidance constraints. We present three novel, exact formulations to describe collision constraints. The first formulation is derived from a proposition concerning the separation of a point and a convex set. We prove the separating proposition through De Morgan's laws. Then, leveraging the hyperplane separation theorem we propose two efficient reformulations. Compared with the existing dual formulations and the first formulation, they significantly reduce the number of auxiliary variables to be optimized and inequality constraints within the nonlinear programming problem. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed formulations is demonstrated in the context of typical autonomous parking scenarios compared with state of the art. For generality, we design three initial guesses to assess the computational effort required for convergence to solutions when using the different collision formulations. The results illustrate that the scheme employing De Morgan's laws performs equally well with those utilizing dual formulations, while the other two schemes based on hyperplane separation theorem exhibit the added benefit of requiring lower computational resources.
Second-Order Convergent Collision-Constrained Optimization-Based Planner

Finding robot poses and trajectories represents a foundational aspect of robot motion planning. Despite decades of research, efficiently and robustly addressing these challenges is still difficult. Existing approaches are often plagued by various limitations, such as intricate geometric approximations, violations of collision constraints, or slow first-order convergence. In this paper, we introduce two novel optimization formulations that offer provable robustness, achieving second-order convergence while requiring only a convex approximation of the robot's links and obstacles. Our first method, known as the Explicit Collision Barrier (ECB) method, employs a barrier function to guarantee separation between convex objects. ECB uses an efficient matrix factorization technique, enabling a second-order Newton's method with an iterative complexity linear in the number of separating planes. Our second method, referred to as the Implicit Collision Barrier (ICB) method, further transforms the separating planes into implicit functions of robot poses. We show such an implicit objective function is twice-differentiable, with derivatives evaluated at a linear complexity. To assess the effectiveness of our approaches, we conduct a comparative study with a first-order baseline algorithm across six testing scenarios. Our results unequivocally justify that our method exhibits significantly faster convergence rates compared to the baseline algorithm.
Conflict-Based Model Predictive Control for Scalable Multi-Robot Motion Planning

This paper presents a scalable multi-robot motion planning algorithm called Conflict-Based Model Predictive Control (CB-MPC). Inspired by Conflict-Based Search (CBS), the planner leverages a similar high-level conflict tree to efficiently resolve robot-robot conflicts in the continuous space, while reasoning about each agent's kinematic and dynamic constraints and actuation limits using MPC as the low-level planner. We show that tracking high-level multi-robot plans with a vanilla MPC controller is insufficient, and results in unexpected collisions in tight navigation scenarios. Compared to other variations of multi-robot MPC like joint, prioritized, and distributed, we demonstrate that CB-MPC improves the executability and success rate, allows for closer robot-robot interactions, and reduces the computational cost significantly without compromising the solution quality across a variety of environments. Furthermore, we show that CB-MPC combined with a high-level path planner can effectively substitute computationally expensive full-horizon multi-robot kinodynamic planners.
Safe motion planning with environment uncertainty

We present an approach for safe motion planning under robot state and environment (obstacle and landmark location) uncertainties. To this end, we first develop an approach that accounts for the landmark uncertainties during robot localization. Existing planning approaches assume that the landmark locations are well known or are known with little uncertainty. However, this might not be true in practice. Noisy sensors and imperfect motions compound to the errors originating from the estimate of environment features. Moreover, possible occlusions and dynamic objects in the environment render imperfect landmark estimation. Consequently, not considering this uncertainty can wrongly localize the robot, leading to inefficient plans. Our approach thus incorporates the landmark uncertainty within the Bayes filter estimation framework. We also analyze the effect of considering this uncertainty and delineate the conditions under which it can be ignored. Second, we extend the state-of-the-art by computing an exact expression for the collision probability under Gaussian distributed robot motion, perception and obstacle location uncertainties. We formulate the collision probability process as a quadratic form in random variables. Under Gaussian distribution assumptions, an exact expression for collision probability is thus obtained which is computable in real-time. In contrast, existing approaches approximate the collision probability using upper-bounds that can lead to overly conservative estimate and thereby suboptimal plans. We demonstrate and evaluate our approach using a theoretical example and simulations. We also present a comparison of our approach to different state-of-the-art methods.
Decentralized Deadlock-free Trajectory Planning for Quadrotor Swarm in Obstacle-rich Environments -- Extended version

This paper presents a decentralized multi-agent trajectory planning (MATP) algorithm that guarantees to generate a safe, deadlock-free trajectory in an obstacle-rich environment under a limited communication range. The proposed algorithm utilizes a grid-based multi-agent path planning (MAPP) algorithm for deadlock resolution, and we introduce the subgoal optimization method to make the agent converge to the waypoint generated from the MAPP without deadlock. In addition, the proposed algorithm ensures the feasibility of the optimization problem and collision avoidance by adopting a linear safe corridor (LSC). We verify that the proposed algorithm does not cause a deadlock in both random forests and dense mazes regardless of communication range, and it outperforms our previous work in flight time and distance. We validate the proposed algorithm through a hardware demonstration with ten quadrotors.
